EDUCATION FUNDING

As a graduate of Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS), I would pursue policies that value and support the teachers and paraprofessionals who are the backbone of PGCPS. Noncompetitive salaries, poor recruitment, and a lack of investment in professional development are major reasons that we fail to recruit or retain many good teachers.

In line with the County Council’s January 2017 Blue Ribbon report, I will work with the County Council to repeal Question 1 and maximize the Homestead Tax Cap. The high tax rates we already have to keep many businesses from ever coming to the County.

I am committed to treating education aides and support personnel as professionals and work with the Board of Education to address overcrowded classrooms and failing infrastructure.

A WORLD-CLASS SCHOOL SYSTEM REQUIRES:

  • High performing team: a valued workforce with manageable class sizes

  • Basic supplies: perennial shortages of basic supplies at many of our schools are inexcusable. Creative solutions like the Baltimore Teacher Supply Swap in addition to systemic changes to ensure no classroom lacks paper or other tools.

  • Healthy environments: heat in the winter, air conditioning during the warmer months, and learning spaces free from toxins in the air and water.

  • Food: Hunger-free students with enough to eat for breakfast and lunch. Innovative partnerships like Denver’s Food for Thought program are desperately needed as hunger rates are on the rise. Children cannot learn if they are hungry.
